Kevin Whitfield – Wake Up Sleeping Beauty
Kevin Whitfield is an Athens, GA based singer/songwriter with a Nashville inspired writing style. His appreciation for Ben Rector, Dave Barnes, and Steve Moakler mixed with his early inspiration by Don McLean, Jason Mraz, and The Decemberists produces a unique “indie-pop”-ish sound that promises—if nothing less—to give listeners a fresh perspective on familiar genres.
After asking Kevin about the song, he was awesome enough to give me the first, exclusive insight into the inspiration.
After the break-up I pretty much went all out trying to win this girl back. It wasn’t over for me, hence the line “The story won’t end if I never stop writing it.” It was my way of saying that I refuse to close the book on it. I believed that she was still in love and that I just needed to get through to her. “Wake up, Sleeping Beauty“. You know you’re never dreaming too deep to reach.” The song is a play on the original story of sleeping beauty, and how relentlessly the prince pursued her. He’d climb the towers walls to search for her, shed his armor and fight to find her. And all of the things that were once important to him were so small from the towering walls of the castle he found her in.”
