Breanna Barbara – Sailin’ Sailin’
Singer-songwriter Breanna Barbara’s forthcoming Mirage Dreams introduces a bold new voice steeped in occult blues (think of it as a Southern Gothic fusion of blues and psychedelia), with songs about losing a parent to an overdose and a New York of empty clubs and sweaty, unairconditioned lofts but also about falling in love and finding an artistic voice. On opening track and first single, “Sailin’ Sailin’,” Breanna picks up a slide guitar and tackles the death of a family member head on, evoking “streaming through life after a loved one disappears.”
Breanna discusses Sailin’ Sailin’,
This is the most recent song I wrote on the album. I wanted to play around with a different rhythm on slide guitar than I was used to, something more upbeat. The words “Sailin’, Sailin’” quickly came out of me based on the beat. And a lot of this album is a product of my own experience of losing a parent to a drug overdose. It reminded me of certain scenes in the movie Requiem for a Dreamwhen there are drugs streaming through a system. I wanted to match that image with streaming through life after a loved one disappears. There is very much a self destructive period, at least for me, and very much euphoric moments of epiphanies.
