Our friend Jennifer Thorington over at Working Brilliantly asked my opinion of their friends, Great Spirit. I popped open the private track and took the first on off the top, “Pow-Wow”…
I’m loving this! Excellently recorded and mixed, the vocal sits just right in a “timeless” sound that has been part of the musical soul’s landscape for centuries. That makes it really easy to listen to and to want to listen to it again and again. Yeah, I think I’ll do that.
Here’s a groovin’ sample tune from the upcoming release.
Great Spirit’s debut EP, Front Porch to Frontier (out January 13th), draws from a wide range of nostalgic influences. From field recordings to spirit animals, The Grateful Dead to the Lone Ranger – the EP pays homage to the greater mystery that encompasses it all.
I’m sticking with this first tune for now in hopes that we can talk them into a preview exclusive for the Mid Tenn Listens Live show.
Chime in below and let ’em know they should!
Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, Great Spirit combines poetic lyricism with equal parts folk-rock, bluegrass and funk to form a genre uniquely its own. Cosmic-Mountain-Folk-Grass, and the lyrics that accompany it, undoubtedly reflect the pervasiveness of the Northern California landscape in which all three members of Great Spirit were raised.
Their debut album Front Porch to Frontier readily touches on the archetypal nature of the landscape – in homage to the greater mystery that encompasses it. Front Porch to Frontier combines tasteful blends of musical ability with distinctive original songwriting. Rooted in traditional bluegrass and seasoned with everything from jazz to rock, the record is an honest portrait of people that compose the band itself. http://www.thegreatspiritband.com/bio/
