In this interview, we speak to our favorite (Nashville-based) theatrical scamp rocker, Zach Ferrin of Fable Cry, to discuss the new release, influences and more.
Q&A, links and a stream of the new video, Dead Or Alive (For Now), below.
Let’s dive a little deeper into You, the artist and your music. What attracted you to this genre(s) or style(s)?
My musical tastes have always been broad. Rather than settling for just one of the styles I enjoy, I wanted to blend them together in a way that felt familiar, but was still somewhat unexpected. I find myself constantly looking for music that satisfies me so, selfishly, I write the music and songs that I wish existed. Though, I feel that we’re just scratching the surface!
How long have you been creating and sharing your music with the public?
I first started writing/performing music in bands throughout high school. As for Fable Cry, specifically, it started in 2010.
Who or what influences your playing and/or writing? Also, what motivates you to keep going?
Anything that’s passionate. If a band/artist/writer is passionate about what they do and how they do it, that inspires me and tends to feed my own passion and creativity. As far as the way that I play and write, that’s a culmination of everything a like – mostly made by passionate people! I’m motivated to keep going because I haven’t found anything that I enjoy more than music. I’m young, but fairly confident that I never will – not trying to prove myself wrong, either! #passion
Were you trying to accomplish anything specific on this new project? Creatively or otherwise?
This album was the first album that we did with Fable Cry as a full band and not just a duo, as with our first album. So, in many ways, we were recreating what we were doing, showing that much of the spirit of the band remained, but that it had definitely matured. We wanted something that felt as though you were being welcomed into this spooky world, one that might awaken your inner monster that’s just been looking for a place to play.
What was the last song you listened to?
I’m currently listening to David Bowie’s “Who Can I Be Now?” collection set. Currently playing: “Rebel Rebel”.
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?
They all serve different purposes for me. If I’m in a room: vinyl. If I’m in a car: CD. Anywhere else I have my headphones in and it’s gotta be digital because my pants are typically just big enough for me and my phone to fit in. No Walkman for this walking man! #JustNoMoreRoom
How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?
Bandcamp is preferable as a musician and supports us the best of these mentioned. I’m currently streaming Bowie on Spotify, though, so… #YouCaughtMe #ImEvenInARoom #NotListeningToVinylLikeISaid
Other than the digital era overwhelming us with access to an abundance of music, what are one or two of the biggest challenges you face when trying to attract listeners to your music?
I think the same things that make it challenging for us are often the same things that help us. We are a very visual and theatrical band. If people like that sort of thing, they’ll see pictures and been drawn to it. If they don’t like that sort of thing, then I feel bad for them because they are missing out… However, one thing we are consistent in, is entertaining anyone who is in front of us. If we get/find you at a show, there isn’t much of a chance you won’t enjoy yourself.
Do you gig, tour or perform? Do you ever live stream? Where can music lovers see you live?
Eventually, EVERYWHERE! We are doing some weekend/regional runs through the next few months, then more next year. Glad you bring up live streaming, because more of that is in the works as well.
Where is the best place to connect with you online? Discover more of your music?
Facebook is the main way we keep in touch with our audience, but we are on YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, and all of the aforementioned streaming sites. Pick your poison!
Any last thoughts? Shout outs? Words of wisdom?
Well, first of all, thank you for having me back for these questions! I reread the last interview I did with you, and you asked the same question at the end. So, I’m gonna just defer to myself on that one. And “You won’t believe what Zach said in Question 8!” #clickbait
Okay, but really, we are having our Festival of Ghouls variety show in Nashville on October 30th at Exit/In, along with some surrounding out of town dates. It’s our annual spooky rock n roll show with music, dance, danger, puppets, juggling, contortion, aerial, and more! Again, Facebook will have all of that lovely info for you. Hope to see everyone there!
