If Rock and Roll 101: Rocking Hard is offered as a course any where, it may be in New Jersey. Top of the class would have to be Elevator Art with their new EP Tent City.
Tent City is also a large camp in Lakewood, NJ where the homeless community has settled. The band drew inspiration from this for the title track, Tent City. They cite the camp as “an example of the complete abolishment of social and moral status.
Elevator Art, out of Toms River, New Jersey, is a collective of six artists in the vein of acts such as Jethro Tull and Fleetwood Mac. They have a reputation for rocking stages in the Tri-State area.
Tent City is a like jumping on a ride at Six Flags. You have the slow build up of Good Morning – a raw and vocally powerful track. Then its off to the races with the title track, Tent City. The overall vibe of this EP gives us a classic rock feel including some guitar riffs that you would expect to jam out to on Guitar Hero.
Outside all the comparisons to classic rock acts, Elevator Art’s theatrical feel and power remind me of modern rockers My Chemical Romance circa Black Parade. This is the case on Killing Time. One of the songs that features both the male and female vocalists; and complete with a flute solo that would make Ron Burgundy proud.
The first single off this EP is the last track, My Lesbian Father. My favorite line: “my lesbian father, married my mother, over the internet, but they have never met”.
Elevator Art’s wit and social viewpoint can be heard and felt throughout Tent City, complimented by its moving riffs and full sound. Be on the lookout for big things to come from this band.
Tent City Is Available August 14th
