Where are you from, and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)
Eileen Carey: Born and raised in a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio and a longtime resident of Altadena California. My style, whether people call my music Country, Country-Pop, Adult Contemporary or Top 40 Pop has always been up tempo, melodic and positive; and pushing the envelope of all the genres that I have been identified with. I have been charting cross genre for years now.
Ideas matter to me more than markets etc. I see my music as cinematic short films. I have been very involved in the making of my music videos, and I am being so with the video for the new single “Good Bad Girl.” I don’t specifically think about genre when an idea for a song hits me. I decide what co-writer and what genre it is for when I have said what I wanted to say. Then it goes back and forth with that co-writer till we feel it is ready for the studio. That the music and the lyric truly sing. My music is a peoples music and appeals to a broad cross section of grown up music lovers. This is how I see my music.
What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to stay the course?
EC: I played drums as a kid, and was always involved in theatre growing up as well. I came to Los Angeles to make films, and though I had appeared in a number of films including a Ray Charles Diet Pepsi Super Bowl commercial. It wasn’t paying the bills, so I went to work for the Sheraton Hotel organization and did the entertainment booking and follow through, where it dawned on me that I was a better singer than the acts I was booking.
As far as I am concerned, there is no longer any option but to stay the course. I am never so much myself as when I am performing my music and it is my gift to the world, and I have been successful reaching my fans with my message of self-empowerment and positive thinking over my five CD career. Also, I do think I am consciously living the life I was meant to live. I think in life you have to make yourself who you want to be. Also, I have so many things that I want to accomplish yet! Music is my doorway to so many things that I want to do in the future.
How is your new release different than previous ones? Did you set out to accomplish anything specific?
EC: My previous single, In the Air, was directly a celebration of love for the City of Paris!! My daughter was married in the South of France and it was so thrilling to be in the “City of Love” that I wrote In the Air. I didn’t write my current single Good Bad Girl, but the moment my rhythm guitarist Al Bonhomme played it for me I knew it was written for me! And in fact it was (lol). But, I think it reflects the complicated humans that women are in general. I like to think all my songs have a purpose, something to accomplish.
Do you face challenges as an indie musician in a digital age? How has technology helped you (assuming it helps)?
EC: As far as I can see, and certainly in my own career, the digital world evened the playing field for indie artists. It would be hard to compete for an indie without it. It opened the ability of an artist to create, promote and distribute music worldwide. Is there a lot of “noise” out there because so many people are trying to break through that “noise” as well? Yes of course, but those independents that have competitive music with the label acts can actually reach and influence audiences today. The challenge for an indie is not so much in getting recognition for their music, as it is the quality of the music itself I believe.
Having said the above, the greatest tool for a musical artist being heard in the digital era is still terrestrial radio, and of course television. I think those avenues have a psychological effect on people, a confirmation for the music consumer.

Anything else before we sign off?
EC: Yes. I have a number of exciting things coming up for me. I am in the midst of working on the video for Good Bad Girl and it should be out by the time this interview is actually posted. It is the fair and festival season, and as I do each year, I am looking forward to playing the OC Fair, California State Fair, Del Mar… My recent RAW Organization performance at Boulevard 3 in Hollywood, where I played in front of 1100 people has opened the door for me to play Nashville and San Francisco for that organization in the very near future. I am planning to put a Northern California and then Tennessee, Kentucky and Ohio tour together using those RAW organization events as my anchor.
