Jason Vitelli, a fixture in New York City’s singer/songwriter scene for nearly two decades, introduces his latest album, “1. AMBIENT CORRIDORS,” a collection of instrumental tracks designed to take listeners on a unique musical journey.
Drawing inspiration from the episodic adventures of “Rick and Morty,” each track serves as a planet within a solar system, guiding listeners through inter-dimensional realms within the span of a half-hour.
From the mesmerizing synth melodies to the delicate harp notes, “1. AMBIENT CORRIDORS” promises a listener experience that transcends time and space.
Jason Vitelli reflects on the creative process, noting the contrast between songwriting’s linear narratives, often rooted in inner turmoil, and the abstract openness of instrumental compositions:
“Songwriting can originate from a place of inner angst and psychological struggle, so it may naturally have a linear narrative. This aspect may leave less for the listener to interpret. Meanwhile, the abstraction posed by instrumentals can allow more space for the brain to breathe. In any case, this music reflects upon who I am at the moment of creation. Who knows, I may become someone entirely different at the end of the day.”
For Vitelli, each composition represents a snapshot of his identity at the moment of creation, with the potential for evolution as time passes.
He skillfully blends acoustic instruments like cello, viola, piano, and electric guitar with electronic manipulations of found objects, demonstrating his versatility across both traditional and contemporary musical realms.
The album’s 12 tracks offer a diverse fusion of genres and influences. Notable pieces such as “Exit Love Story” and “Night Falls” exemplify Vitelli’s compositional range. “Exit Love Story” paints a vivid portrait of love’s cyclical nature with its sweet piano melodies, double bass, and jazz-infused rhythms which were originally crafted for a film project. Meanwhile, “Night Falls” ventures into a chillwave and downtempo electronica territory, blending disco beats with cascading vibraphone scales to create an immersive experience.
Whether you’re seeking a cerebral exploration or a physical dance floor experience, “1. AMBIENT CORRIDORS” delivers on both fronts.
And as the weather heats up and a rare total eclipse graces North America in April, the album’s celestial melodies are poised to complement the cosmic event. Tracks like “Irrational Quash,” “Unbeknownst,” and “Chukchi Sea” offer a diverse range of sounds and genres that mimic the ebb and flow of nature.
Vitelli’s music career has included performances at prestigious New York City venues, collaborations with jazz ensembles, and even busking in subway stations. Drawing from his diverse array of experiences, he embraces a wide range of influences and continues to explore music in increasingly unique ways.
Based in New York City, he regularly shares his music with audiences, finding a home in venues like The Bitter End, Café Wha?, and Kenny’s Castaways in Greenwich Village. He also performs at educational institutions, such as Rutgers University for The New Jersey Folk Festival.
