Bass player, composer, producer and massively talented creative human being Don Tocabajo is getting ready for the release of his new project, Signs, on March 15th (2021). Lucky for us, I received an advance copy and will proceed to spotlight this project.
It was Highway to Hell by AC/DC and a 12-string Ovation guitar that sparked the musical journey of Tocabajo. Finding himself fascinated by rhythms, the lower frequencies, and a desire to create his own music, Don found a partner in the electric bass. It’s from this starting point that Don’s budding music career began to take shape.
Participating in various bands across various musical styles, Don found himself playing and composing rock, funk, Latin, crossover genres and more. Through traveling, his musical tastes became more diverse; especially during his time in South America.
During the days of Myspace (yes, Myspace, remember that gem?), Tocabajo‘s solo releases garnered thousands of listens and received a swarm of positive reviews. Serving as composer, arranger, mixer and producer, Don has released multiple EPs with varying themes for each project. For instance, Bass 4.0 is electronic heavy, Big Bang is laden with heavy rock and metal guitars, and Ad Gustum is a mix of Latin funk rock, brass and metal guitars. Don also managed to release an album, The First Contact, with his band Alienshake during this time period.
What else has Don Tocabajo managed to accomplish?
Well, how about several German and global jury awards including: German Rock Pop Preis, Akademia Music Awards USA, Global Music Awards USA, 5 Star Nomination Songwriting Contest England and more. In other words, Don stays busy and never stops creating.
With this historical context in mind, Don is preparing for his latest project, Signs, to become publicly available on March 15th.
Signs is packed with 6 well crafted compositions that are founded in influences from metal, non-Western musical cultures, and Don’s passion for creating original, engaging music that really JAMS! I mean, it really does.
As someone who appreciates a certain complexity in the musicianship and musicality, Signs delivers! You can listen to this EP multiple times and pull something out of each track you didn’t notice the last time you listened.
Don’s ability to compose music that engages the listener without being repetitive or boring really drives Signs above and beyond that of your average indie music release. Don is a musician, a producer, a composer, and really knows how to deliver a culturally diverse range of musical styles in a hard rock and melodic metal foundation.
Signs is an album you should turn up really loud and let play through from beginning to end.
