Sometimes it takes me a minute to get there, and that happened today, in more ways than one. You ever have one of those days when drivin’ along the river is too nice to go to work just now? Yeah that’s part of it…
Cannibus… it rolls along in a phat ass zig-zag …
I gotta admit on the first couple tokes, I choked and choked hard. But as I got a handle on it, the thing kinda stoned me.
That first choke was due to the overly explicit lyrics, I just can’t get into that no matter what, but I’m looking for the good bits in everything, so I toke on…
I get into this thing a few tunes deep and I’m goin’ “wow! There’s some really good samples and beats and loops!” and it’s kinda blowin’ my mind. Then I realize that somehow my player has loaded the record all out of order when the “Intro” (yeah that’s it’s name) track comes up and I start really thinking I wouldn’t have been so instantly jaded if I had heard it first.
Thy Muel of Cleveland, OH has assembled a great team and a really jammin’ hip-hop record that at points made me think of Cypress Hill and some old Beasties. He even has a track about 1995, but I have a hard time believing he was very old, then.
Thy’s Cannibus rides along smooth as smoke on a calm day. Muel, KPT and Jaylenz all give smooth and lyrical vocal performances over a bed of low-rider pounding jazz and old timey influenced beats and the darn bus Rokks, baby!
Again, I’m not sure what order I was supposed to find the tracks in, and that kinda sucks, but when I got down to “She’s Gone” (the last one on my playlist) I finally found myself really getting into one as Thy gets into some deep personal stuff. With this kind of writing, he could go a long long way on the bus.
I wish I could say the same about all the tracks. Most of them are so laden with profanity and meaningless gang-banger braggadocio that they just don’t say anything worthwhile to me. But, hey I’m an old man, I do recall a day when I would have gotten a big kick out of the pot references! OK, at least I think I do…
If I had one piece of advice for this young rapper, it would be go back to the writing desk or your quiet space or wherever it really turns you on. Get into some great beats and pour your heart out like you did on “She’s Gone.” You got talent and soul, don’t let the bullshit hold you back!
