Constellation Quartet is a collective of highly talented and classically schooled musicians who have no qualms about contemporizing their art form. What I mean is that this crew of composers and performers are naturals at blending and weaving their craft into pop culture and modern music.
Only a year-ish old, Constellation Quartet formed to participate in The Neighborhood Concert in Los Angeles. The Neighborhood Concert is a business that began organizing and hosting socially distanced events in people’s front yards. What a wonderful idea!!
The group has also been performing to sold out crowds as part of the Garden Concert Series in Redondo Beach. They’ve sold out 10 shows this year!
As Los Angeles pros, collectively and individually the group has worked on a long and growing list of projects. Some of these include recording with pop artists, working with film composers, and orchestrating projects for Netflix (like Ellen Degeneres’ Green Eggs and Ham).
As a way to connect with listeners…and to help listeners connect with them (and the original artists of The Venice Sessions‘ tracklist)…Constellation Quartet set up shop for one day in Kevin Jarvis’ Venice, CA studio. They finished recording the EP in one session!
In regards to mixing the classical with the modern, Constellation Quartet had this to say,
Part of our overall mission is to help revitalize Classical music. Although we’re not playing classical repertoire, we all have a background in classical pedagogy and a deep respect for the traditions of that music. In order to survive, we think it’s imperative that classical musicians are able to contemporize both their role as players and their connections with the community around them.
I would say Constellation Quartet with accomplishing this mission and accomplishing it quite well!
If you’re in the LA area, I’d highly recommend trying to see them live.
