The formation of the Bud Collins Trio is a bit of a debatable topic. Some say they came together in the ’70s. Some say the ’80s. Some don’t really care. All they know is the Trio’s sonic prowess has been stimulating their senses for decades.
Spawning from the Northeastern US, their early days were spent playing on and off campus around the University of Connecticut. Soon they began infecting neighboring college towns with their alluring sounds reaching unsuspecting residents of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island and Boston. Soon they made their way into NYC playing iconic CBGB on a regular basis and finding themselves included on an obscure Christmas compilation of NYC punk bands from CBGBs circa 1980s; BC3 was the only “progressive whatever” band on the record.
While MTV was gradually killing off the radio star with their non-stop supply of music videos, the Trio’s video for Fisticuffs aired regularly on MTV Basement Tapes and the band played with high profile acts including Maceo Parker, Bob Mould, Blues Travelers and The Monks of Doom. They became road warriors and took their infectious arrangements across the land.
Entering the early ’90s, Bud Collins (of Bud Collins Trio) found himself performing for Bud Collins (Wimbledon/Boston Globe/NBC Tennis) during his Tennis Hall of Fame induction. Sports Illustrated was there producing a human interest story about the event.
Sometime during the mid-90s, BC3 split up but, thankfully for music lovers everywhere, rejoined in 2008. Picking up where they left off, the band has pumped out over 100 new tunes which are being assembled and arranged into various projects. One of those projects is the forthcoming full length album State Vector Collapse. The band’s Quasarmoto EP was released in 2016 charting the band on 109 college radio stations across the US.
The band’s most recent EP No 5uch Th1ng features the single Television Personalities which you can hear below. The band is fresh off a trio of shows on the Red Gorilla Stages during SXSW 2018. The group continue receiving major support from US radio as this new project is currently being supported by 80+ college and non commercial US stations.
