It was approximately a year ago when North Carolina based Bittersweet Machines managed to thoroughly impress me. When listening to the No Bad Horizons album (feature article here), what seemed like a group of talented musicians turned out to be a one-man show.
Bittersweet Machines is back with a new album. The title is The Stars & Ground. If you’re wondering how much evolution has taken place over the previous twelve months, pop in your ear buds (or turn up the speakers) and prepare to enjoy a collection of alternative rockin’ jams with highly potent pop melodies, stimulating sonic arrangements, and the unwavering passion of the man and the machine, Matt Mocharnuk.
Whether you are mellowing out to the beautiful sounds of Days To Remember, the distorted guitars and infectious melodies of You’re My Favorite, the synth infused groove and intensifying energy of Fire In The City, or the radio ready appeal of the title track The Stars and Ground, you are guaranteed to be treated with a highly enjoyable alternative rock experience that leans heavily on the radio-ready, pop sensible zone of the full rock music spectrum. Bitter Fruit is also worth mentioning as it delivers quite the epic listening experience; be sure to check it out.
Matt is a powerhouse of a musician and songwriter. His consistency is one of the most noticeable aspects. Listening to either No Bad Horizons or this new album The Stars and Ground proves this. Speaking of Matt’s previous album, he had this to say about the relationship between the two releases,
I consider “The Stars & Ground” to be a sister album to my 2018 release “No Bad Horizon”. Like any siblings there are some very obvious connections that they share and also some significant differences. Other parallels are a little more subtle… Both albums play with themes of reflecting on experiences from the past while looking forward to the future. This is captured both lyrically and in the production. I really wanted the lyrics to represent my current station in life; a significant accumulation of moments and perspective but also knowing that there is still so much to look forward to.
