Fasten your seat belts, folks, it’s going to be a bumpy ride. Describing Big City Cowgirl is like being unprepared in the eye of a hurricane – it ain’t easy. Big City Cowgirl is no common musical artist. She is intense, yet funny. Conservative, yet wild. Realistic, yet positive.
Big City Cowgirl has a full-time day job working in the field of law. At night and on weekends, she apportions her time between taking care of her husband, her 7 year old daughter and her 4 dogs, and her family and friends. And, oh yeah, then there’s this music thing. Make no mistake about it, Big City Cowgirl may be overextended, but she makes sure there is time to focus on her music which she depicts as “cathartic,” “enjoyable,” and “a must.” Making music is akin to a raison d’etre for her.
Big City Cowgirl has been making music since she was just a little girl. How has she evolved? She told us, “I’m definitely more complicated and multi-faceted, and my music has transformed as I have.” And how does her day time profession affects her music? She explains, “All day long I listen to people talk about their relationships – whether good or bad – and that figures prominently into my songwriting. I genuinely care about people and am motivated by them.”
Big City Cowgirl’s newest song, about to be released this month, is entitled “I’m Standin’ Out Here (For A Reason).” Big City Cowgirl relates that the song was conceived after her daughter came up with the title. She recounted, “After my daughter told me about the title, she told me that I had to write a song with that title.” Apparently, her daughter was her inspiration to get back into writing and releasing music several years ago after she had taken a break to focus on her personal life. Just how connected is her daughter to her music? Big City Cowgirl mused, “My daughter loves music and she really gets involved when I am creating new songs. She even sometimes, out of the blue, will start singing the lyrics to my songs – ones that are recorded, or ones I am in the process of writing.”
After her daughter told her to write “I’m Standin’ Out Here (For A Reason),” Big City Cowgirl started to think about “a great angle” for the song. What she conceptualized was a song where one best friend falls for another but initially lacking the guts to tell their best friend about their feelings, is inspired by a song to “go for it.” What song, you may ask, was the motivation for the big reveal? Big City Cowgirl divulged that it is Jason Isbell’s song, Molotov. A huge Americana/Outlaw Country fan, she described Molotov as “a great song with powerhouse lyrics” and “the story of a maverick looking back on a life-long love without regret.” Why would this song inspire “Standin’”? Big City Cowgirl replies, “Because the person listening to the song wants to have the type of relationship depicted in Molotov, and is sure that their best friend will fit the bill.”
Intentionally gender neutral, the song is upbeat with heavy fiddle and distorted guitar, and Big City Cowgirl identifies its melody as “somewhere between country and Broadway.” Recorded at Dare Studios of Long Island, Big City Cowgirl notes that she has been “a client of Dare for quite some time now. Mike gets me. We work well together.” Definitely unique, give Big City Cowgirl a listen. It will be worth your while. “I’m Standin’ Out Here (For A Reason)” will be released this month – June, 2019 – and will be available to stream or purchase on most music platforms.
