In this interview spotlight, we chat with folk/pop singer-songwriter Becca Roth about her new Unstable EP as well as influences, the digital music world and more.
Full Q&A along with links and streams below.
Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)
I am originally from a small town outside of Philly but I lived in Boston for 4 years during college and have been based in LA for the past 2 years. Lately I’ve been describing my sound as “girl-with-guitar” music, but I tend to stay in the realm of singer/songwriter and folk/pop.
What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to stay the course?
I just love music more than anything in the world and I feel like it is my calling. I could tell you about the music I listened to growing up, or about getting my first guitar, but the reason I really continue on this path is based around this mysterious feeling I have when I’m sad but I can’t stop singing about it.
Who or what are your biggest influences when it comes to your creativity?
I feel most influenced by a few of the female mentors in my life. When I’m with someone who can really see me, something in me breaks open and allows me to feel more compassion for myself and for other people and all I want to do is write about it.
How is your new release different than previous ones? Did you set out to accomplish anything specific?
My new release, “Unstable EP” is a very organic compilation of some of my most personal songs. It’s different than anything I’ve done in the past because it represents a part of my life when I was really struggling with my identity and finding out who I am. My goal with this EP was mainly to be able to express that identity to the world (or whoever is kind enough to listen).
Do you face any challenges as an indie musician in a digital age? On the flip side, how has technology helped you (if it has)?
I don’t think that the challenges I face as an indie musician are any different than those of any other artist. My EP wouldn’t have been possible without the capabilities of technology in production!
How do you feel about streaming services? Any romantic attachments to the physical formats: vinyl, 8-track, cassettes, CDs?
I love the convenience of streaming services when listening to music, I just wish there was a way to get artists the pay they deserve from that streaming. I’ve been thinking about getting a record player and starting a vinyl collection lately. There’s is definitely something special about music in a tangible format.
