MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The 34th annual Uncle Dave Macon Days, July 8-10 presented by Beaman Dodge Chrysler, Jeep, Ram of Murfreesboro, will take place at Cannonsburgh Village, 312 S. Front St, for three days of family-oriented fun.
Two highly-coveted awards are presented during the event. This year’s Heritage Award winner is 4-time Grammy award winner, David Holt, who is a master performer, story teller and musician. The honor is awarded on Saturday at 5 p.m. On Friday evening at 7, the stunning brother-harmony of The Delmore Brothers will be remembered with the Trailblazer Award. Both awards are given to individual(s) who have dedicated themselves to the promotion and perpetuation of traditional southern music.
The event features highly charged music and dance competitions with a purse of more than $10,000 at state. It is home to three national championships in Old-Time banjo, buckdancing and clogging.
Established to honor the memory of Uncle Dave Macon and the era in which he lived, the weekend celebration annually draws more than 40,000 visitors.
Macon lived near Murfreesboro and is considered one of the first Grand Ole Opry superstars. A master banjo player and entertainer he performed up to the week of his death in 1952, and was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1966.
Considered one of America’s premier summer festivals, many other activities in addition to the stage competitions take place. Visitors enjoy heritage activities for children, ethnic and southern style concessions, locally handcrafted arts and crafts, living history demonstrations, a historic photo exhibit, storytelling, shape-note singing, a “motorless” parade on Saturday morning, shade-tree jamming, the showing of Uncle Dave in the black and white 1940s film, “The Grand Ole Opry,” and a Sunday Gospel Showcase and Community Service Fair.
